Phoenix Steel consistently provides you with flat rolled steel that is just right for your job, right from the start.

We maintain an extensive inventory of high quality hot rolled, cold rolled and coated steel in our 102,000 sq. ft processing facility. Material is available to all appropriate ASTM and JIS standards, and SAE chemical grades.  Grades and gauges not listed are available upon inquiry.

Hot Rolled Steel

Hot rolled steel is recognized for its versatility and value. This type of steel is ideal for construction projects, including frameworks for buildings and bridges, as well as for manufacturing rail tracks and other large structural elements. Its surface has a slightly rough, powdery texture due to its distinctive black oxidation, commonly referred to as scale.

Customer Benefits:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Generally more affordable due to its minimal processing.
  • Ease of Use: The material’s malleability makes it suitable for a range of structural applications.

Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled Steel (HRPO)

Hot Rolled Pickled and Oiled steel is a derivative of hot rolled steel that has been further processed to improve its usability and performance. After the initial hot rolling process, the steel is “pickled” by being run through an acidic solution to remove the scale that forms on the surface during the heating process. Following pickling, the steel is coated in oil to prevent rust and corrosion. This additional treatment makes HRPO a preferred choice for applications where surface quality and resistance to rust are important.

Customer Benefits:

  • Improved Surface Quality: The pickling process removes the scale, resulting in a smoother surface that’s more receptive to painting and finishing.
  • Cleaner: By removing scale this material is much cleaner to handle and work with.
  • Enhanced Durability: The oil coating provides a protective barrier against moisture and rust, enhancing the steel’s durability, especially in environments prone to moisture exposure.
  • Versatility: HRPO is used in a wide range of applications, from automotive frames and parts to various construction materials. It’s particularly valued in projects requiring a good surface finish and resistance to corrosion without the additional cost of cold rolling.
  • Workability: Similar to hot rolled steel, HRPO maintains good malleability, making it easy to cut, weld, and form into various shapes and sizes, while offering a better surface condition for finishing processes.

Cold Rolled Steel

Cold rolled steel offers enhanced strength and a smoother surface compared to its hot rolled counterpart, making it suitable for applications requiring high precision and aesthetic appeal. It finds extensive use in the automotive industry for parts and panels, in appliances for exteriors and internal mechanisms, and in the creation of metal furniture and home fittings. This steel’s improved surface finish also makes it a popular choice for projects requiring a high-quality paint or coated finish.

Customer Benefits:

  • Precision: Provides tighter tolerances and better surface conditions for precision applications.
  • Aesthetic Quality: Its smooth surface is ideal for painting and finishing, ensuring a visually appealing product.
  • Versatility: While more expensive, its properties make it suitable for a wide range of applications that require both strength and a fine finish.

Coated Steel

Coated steel is engineered for longevity and resistance to environmental challenges. By applying a protective coating, such as zinc or a polymer-based layer, this steel combats corrosion and wear, significantly extending its useful life. This makes it an excellent choice for outdoor construction materials like roofing and siding, automotive components exposed to harsh conditions, and appliances or fixtures subject to frequent use or contact with moisture.

Customer Benefits:

  • Durability: The coatings greatly enhance resistance to rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity.
  • Adaptability: Suitable for a diverse array of applications, from industrial to consumer products.
  • Low Maintenance: The protective layer reduces the need for frequent maintenance or replacement.
